Since its incorporation in 1993, Barking & Dagenham College has been fully responsible for its own management and administration.

The Principal and Senior Managers report to an unpaid Corporation or Governing Body. The Corporation monitors performance and determines plans for the College to meet the future education and skills needs of the local community and local businesses.

Introducing the members of our Corporation

The composition of the Corporation is broadly based, reflecting the College’s wide range of stakeholder groups, including students, staff, local business and local community. The Principal and Chief Executive is also a member. Together they comprise the legal entity of the College. Each member of the Corporation acts in the best interest of the College as a whole when contributing to decisions.

Framework and Responsibilities

The Corporation operates within the legislative framework of the Learning and Skills Act 2000 and the Further Education Act 1992.  The highest level at which its constitution is defined is the Instrument and Articles of Government.  The legal responsibilities of the Corporation are set out in the Articles.  These can be summarised as follows:

Determination and review of the College’s educational character and mission, and the oversight of the College’s activities;
Approving the College’s Quality Strategy;
Ensuring the College’s solvency, the efficient and effective use of its resources, and safeguarding its assets;
Approving the Annual Budget;
Directly employing the Principal and the most Senior Managers;
Setting the framework and approving the policies for the employment of all other staff.

Corporation Committees

The Corporation produces agenda and minutes for its formal meetings which take place at least five times for year. The Corporation is served by a number of committees who operate mainly in an advisory capacity.

There are two statutory committees – Audit, and Search & Governance. You can find the Terms of Reference, agendas, and minutes for these committees by clicking on the links below. Please be aware that in January 2010 we changed our name to Barking & Dagenham College so in some of the older documents available to view, you may find references to our previous name, Barking College.

In addition the Corporation has chosen to delegate responsibility to the following committees:
