What qualifications do I need?
As an adult learner you do not need any formal qualifications but you will be assessed to ensure that this is a suitable course for you.
What will I learn?
This course is for ADULT learners aged 19 or over. (If you are 16 – 18 years of age and wish to study GCSE English, we do have a daytime course available but you need to be enrolled on another course at the College as well. Please speak to our Learner Help Centre for more information.)
If you have a passion for English – reading and writing – this is an ideal course for you.
You will cover set texts during the course – novels, plays and poetry – which you will analyse during class discussions with your tutor and in your assignments.
As part of the course we will arrange trips to the theatre so you can see the plays you are studying.
You will need a reasonable standard of written English, to enable you to successfully present your thoughts and ideas.
How will I be taught?
Through classroom discussions, workshops, studying texts in your own time. You will also present your ideas to your colleagues in the class.
In addition to your class work, you should expect to study for a further 3 hours a week in your own time.
How will I be assessed?
Throughout the year your course work will be assessed and your marks will go towards your final grade. There is also one exam at the end of the course.
What could I do next?
You could progress to A Level English (which is offered by the College), or other Level 3 courses within the College.
A GCSE in English is also a good preparation for work as employers recognise it as the minimum standard.
