About the College: The Corporation
Since its incorporation in 1993, Barking and Dagenham College has been fully responsible for its own management and administration. The Principal and senior managers report to an unpaid Corporation or Governing Body. The Corporation monitors performance and determines plans for the College to meet the future education and skills needs of the local community and local businesses . The composition of the Corporation is broadly based, reflecting the College’s wide range of stakeholder groups, including students, staff, local business and local community. The Principal and Chief Executive is also a member. Together they comprise the legal entity of the College. Each member of the Corporation acts in the best interest of the College as a whole when contributing to decisions. Information about individual members can be found in Members Profiles.
The Corporation operates within the legislative framework of the Learning and Skills Act 2000 and the Further Education Act 1992. The highest level at which its constitution is defined is the Instrument and Articles of Government The legal responsibilities of the Corporation are set out in the Articles. These can be summarised as
- Determination and review of the College’s educational character and mission, and the oversight of the College’s activities
- Approving the College’s Quality Strategy
- Ensuring the College’s solvency, the efficient and effective use of its resources, and safeguarding its assets
- Approving the Annual Budget
- Directly employing the Principal and any other senior postholders
- Setting the framework and approving the policies for the employment of all other staff.
The Corporation produces Agendas and Minutes for its formal meetings which take place at least 5 times a year.
The Corporation is served by a number of committees who operate mainly in an advisory capacity.
