Tutorials

Introduction

Tutorials are a key part of the support for students at Barking and Dagenham College. All full-time students are members of a tutor group. It is an important way of supporting you during your time at Barking and Dagenham College. Your personal tutor will collect information about your progress from your lecturers regularly and discuss it with you. This will lead to agreeing individual action plans to help you achieve the best possible results. If you feel you have a problem, which you cannot discuss with your personal tutor, you can choose to talk to your Head of School or the College Counsellor. The College Counsellor, is in Room A19. You could see the College Nurse, if appropriate, who is in Room A3.

Tutorial Programme

You will receive a planned tutorial programme for the duration of your course. This will be for at least 36 hours per year, for full time students.

Tutorial Theme Weeks

These take place twice per year, and they are concerned with matters such as Equal Opportunities, Health, Environment, Careers and World Culture. The dates for these are announced annually. Tutorial programmes are arranged to coincide with these annually.

Individual Learning Plans

You will be given an Individual Learning Plan when you start your course, and this is a key document which will help you track your progress through the course. It contains a Short Term Targets/Progress Review Form, which will be filled in when you have your one to one tutorial with your personal tutor.

Induction

Your personal tutor will organise your Induction at the beginning of your course. This is where we

  • Try to find out how you learn best (your Learning Style)
  • Find out whether you need any special support (Basic Skills and Key Skills Tests)
  • Help you with study skills available
  • Issue you with key documentation
  • Introduce your Enrichment programme to you

Exciting team building activities are organised at Maysbrook Lakes and Royal Docks, which are opportunity to get to know other students on your course in a fun setting.

A Welcome Fair is also held at Barking and Dagenham College, for four days during your induction.
